About company
Insight Education, LLC (formerly Insight College Prep) was founded in 1999 by a team of Stanford Graduates with the long-term mission of helping students gain entry to the colleges of their choice. Insight applies a unique personalized approach when working with high school students to guide and assist them through all stages of the process including (and not limited to) academics, standardized testing, extracurricular activities, honors and awards, leadership, and volunteer work. We strongly believe that every student possesses a unique set of characteristics, strengths, and passions. We work with families to help cultivate these traits.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
AJ: Manage day-to-day operations which include finance, marketing, sales, and human resources.
PM: My primary responsibilities include working with clients and curriculum development. My partner and I work as team on business planning and strategy.
Most notable milestones
AJ: Led acquisition of Insight College Prep Centers in the Fall of 2004. Spearheaded the transformation of the company through brand overhaul, new and expanded service offerings, and optimized the pricing structure directed at an expanded and more diverse target market. Posted a 10% increase in revenues during first year of new ownership and a 28% increase in revenues during Q1 2006 compared to Q1 2005.
PM: Our first class of seniors successfully completed the college admissions process and recently graduated from high school. Many of our students are going to some of the best schools in the nation and many are also the first generation in their families to attend college.
What's the niche?
AJ: We refuse to pre-package students for name brand schools that aren’t well suited to their unique personality. Rather, we strive to work diligently to learn everything there is to know about out students in order to set ambitious goals for them that we can achieve through a personalized approach to educational counseling.
What's in store for the future?
PM: We hope to grow the company by expanding our locations and areas served. We have currently opened a small office in San Mateo and hope to reach Fremont before the end of the summer. We also hope to expand our service offerings to meet the needs of younger students.
Unexpected learnings along the way
AJ: Entrepreneurship isn’t always sexy. I have to wear my business hat at the same time as I try and fix the Internet and help grade an SAT test. But at the end of the day an owner must know their business intimately.
PM: Conflict is unavoidable no matter how hard you work.

Best way to stay ahead
AJ: Always position yourself for where your company, industry, profession will be in 5 years not where it is today or was 5 years ago. Quote from Wayne Gretzky: “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be.” Also, don’t follow the crowd.
PM: Adopt to the needs of customers and provide the best possible service ALWAYS. Stand your ground and never waver.
“Entrepreneurship isn’t always sexy.”
Guiding principle in life
AJ: You have to want it so you never give up.
PM: Anything is possible. Find a way to make it work, no matter what that “it” is.
Yardstick of success
AJ: Be competitive with myself. No one else matters.
PM: The feeling of success and happiness that comes from doing a good job. In our case, a good job is defined by helping a student attain their educational goals.
Goal yet to be achieved
AJ: Leader of my own diverse holding company (private equity model).
PM: Strong presence in 3 locations.
Best practical advice
AJ: t sounds cliché but the most successful people in this world believe in themselves.
PM: Know a good lawyer and a good accountant. Focus on what you do best and hire the best.
Supportive words from a family member or friend on your venture
AJ: Everything my parents do and say for my sister and I are a blessing even at this stage in our lives.
PM: "I wish I had your services when I was younger!!!"
Most memorable business experience
AJ: Receiving the famous telephone call from Derrick Bolton (MBA Admissions Director) congratulating me on my acceptance to the Stanford Graduate School of Business. A close second is signing the contract to acquire Insight back in December 2004.
PM: The phone ringing off the hook on the day college acceptances arrived and nearly losing my voice from all the screaming out of joy!!
Mentors
AJ: My parents.
What motivated you to get started?
AJ: Being told that something isn’t possible or that I won’t be able to really pushes me. I am also very passionate about looking at the world and thinking up ways that I believe would improve things. These things can be products, services, for-profit and non-profit activities. I just love keeping the curious side of my mind buzzing.
PM: The satisfaction of making a real difference in the life of a young person.
Like best about what you do
AJ: The responsibility to guide change at a company.
PM: Working with the kids!!!
Like least about what you do
