Clinica Tepeyac

The number of uninsured Americans continues to rise with a total of approximately 46 million people or roughly 20% of the country as a whole. In the absence of any comprehensive public health initiative to address the matter, thousands of community clinics have opened their doors to serve the ill and disabled who would otherwise remain at risk to themselves and the population at large. Clinica Tepeyac assists residents of the Denver metro region offering a wide array of services such as preventative screenings, annual exams, and outreach programs all in a culturally and linguistically competent manner. Maya Vigil, 26 and Development Director, says that Clinica Tepeyac’s popularity has been remarkably overwhelming and plans are already in the works to move into a larger facility. Read more about Clinica Tepeyac and their commendable health efforts in this week’s Non-Profit Spotlight.

About the Non-profit

Clínica Tepeyac’s mission is to be a gateway to health for the uninsured residents of Metro Denver. The following goals support this mission:

  • Providing health care in an atmosphere of respect and in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Facilitating community education about the benefits of preventive health care.
  • Increasing health resources available to the community.
Clínica offers access to quality health care for low-income Latinos through medical services in our health clinic, community outreach education through our Reach and Teach program and by working collaboratively with other health organizations on policy issues.

Currently, Clínica provides more than 5,000 patient visits annually. When combined with our outreach programs, the number of people we serve grows to nearly 10,000. However, we are poised to move into a larger and more modern clinic in the first quarter of 2006, which will allow our services to expand by 20%.

Our community-based clinic accomplishes the goals above by providing the following ongoing culturally respectful medical services:
  • Medical Screenings—Screenings for breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer; hypertension; anemia; and HIV/AIDS are offered to all patients.
  • Regular Check-Ups—We offer well-child and well-woman exams and physicals.
  • Diabetic Care—Patients are provided with glucose testing, assistance stabilizing blood-sugar levels and the opportunity to participate in our monthly Diabetes Management support group.
  • Child Immunizations—Clínica provides immunizations for children during pediatric clinics on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
  • Teen Clinic—The teen clinic operates three hours per week and is focused on reaching out to a population not typically targeted by focusing on issues of particular relevance to teens, such as pregnancy, physical activity and obesity.
  • Discounted Medications—Clínica is able to provide medications for a few critical conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension.
  • Prevention Education—Healthy lifestyle information such as exercise and nutrition is provided to patients at risk for chronic illnesses. Health disparities are addressed, and learning how to self-manage one’s health is promoted by promotoras (health outreach workers).
