Hector Preciado, Director
Greenlining InstituteWhat happens when you mix big thinkers with people who know how to take action? At its best, you have organizations like the Greelining Institute. Along with Hector Preciado, 30, Director of Strategic Communications, the Institute is actively showing how businesses would do well to serve low-income and minority communities. Its myriad partnerships with multi-ethnic organizations, private companies and community groups, the Institute has facilitated over $1 trillion in investments. The goal isn't to just make a profit: it's to help give communities a chance to bring themselves up instead of unfairly yanking possibilities away. This is just the beginning of the Greenlining Institute – be sure to read more in this week's Non-Profit Spotlight.

About the Non-profit
Greenlining Institute is a multi-ethnic public policy research and advocacy institute. It was founded in 1993 by John Gamboa and Bob Gnaizda out of the Greenlining Coalition, a coalition dating back to the late 70’s that engaged a multi-ethnic group of dynamic leaders to combat redlining activities.
Most notable milestones
Since its inception Greenlining has leveraged financial institutions into making long-term investment Community Reinvestment Commitments to the tune of over $1 trillion. This year Greenlining celebrated its 10 year anniversary for its Multi-ethnic Leadership Development Academy that now trains, annually, over 100 high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Its alumni association now boasts over 200 young professionals working in government at all levels, the non-profit sector, the private sector, in academia. Many are in key leadership positions and will continue to trailblaze the way to their own extraordinary success, as well as the success of other young professionals.
What's the niche?
What makes Greenlining unique is that we have a multi-ethnic focus and that in the field of public policy we are what is called a “think-and-do” tank. Our research fuels our advocacy and vice versa. We don’t merely offer recommendations, we implement them.
What's the biggest challenge?
We face several challenges but for the biggest will have to be obtaining foundation funding and long term sustainability.
What's in store for the future
We are in the process of revamping our research arm to take it to a higher level. We seek to be a Brookings Intitution-like organization interms of research capacity, but all the while expanding our advocacy capacity.
Who would you like to be contacted by
Young people interested in applying to our Academy, journalists interested in our issues nad and wealthy individual donors.

Back when I was a teenager I realized, after hitting a new low, that whenever I focused with a passion that was not based on selfishness and channeled it for the betterment of others I was most successful.
What keeps you motivated?
Being alive at a time during Katrina, 9/11, Iraq wars, the conservative wing of the Republican party controlling America all these things keep me interested in working towards helping improve the lives of others less fortunate… its like the line in the song Life’s a Bitch in the first NAS album where AZ says, “destined to live the dream for all my peeps who never made it.”
Like best about what you do
How dynamic it is. No two days are the same… that and having my mom call me and say, “I just got a call from your aunt who was screaming about how she just saw you on TV.”

Writing grant proposals.
At age 10, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An anesthesiologist – I heard they work about 3 days a week and get paid well.

The first non-white male president of the US… isn’t it obvious.
Leader in business most interested in meeting and why?
Arturo Moreno, owner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. I’m interested in meeting Arturo Moreno first because he is the first and only (to date) Mexican American owner of a franchise in the greatest American pastime (major League Baseball)… Mexicans (all Latinos) are a part of the fabric of American society, what better statement to assert that that his position. Also, I’d like to get his thoughts on the Immigration situation, how he became a billionaire, how his hair is always so impeccably groomed and what positions are available within his franchise.
