Alex Vasquez, Founder
The New Word on Entrepreneurial Hip Hop, Official Street CardsIt's in the art; it's in the words; it's all in the attitude. It's where the glory of hip-hop meets mainstream America, and it's all through the medium of greeting cards. Meet Official Street Cards (OSC), America's newest presentation of hip-hop culture and a company dedicated to following shifting trends of youth and music. Alex Vasquez, age 35, tells us that he and others founded OSC in 2004 after talking one day about the dearth of hip-hop print materials for their target audience. Thus was born a revolution that has yet to see any failures! If you're looking for messages to send to your mom, your best friend, or your significant other, hit up Official Street Cards and the perfect note will only be inches away. About the company
Sitting at the dinner table one day, we asked what would we want to hear in a greeting card that is completely unique, different and a surreal interpretation of hip hop? That was then the birth of Official Street Cards. Knowing the hip hop culture was missing something. OSC decided to use what they knew best, which was the street knowledge ingrained in the fiber of their core. They knew that the task at hand was a great challenge. However, OSC had the insight and creativity to complete the task. OSC grew up in a generation from the old school Hip Hop to what has now evolved into the mecca of hip hop throughout the world. OSC embraced the challenge!
OSC is picking up where many other greetings card companies dared not. We combined the surreal life images of the hip hop community and the lingo they talk, bringing together a vehicle of expressions unique to the hip hop culture!
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
OSC founders are always on the grind following new trends and networking. Our vision is to expand and fill the void the hip hop culture has been waiting for. When presented with an oppurtinity to talk about out product, we jump at it.
Our day-to-day responsibilities vary from advertising, marketing, mailings, and filling orders. We all share in the responsibilities.
Most notable milestones
The most notable milestone came to us when we were interviewed by the New York Post Latin edition. In 2005 we needed more exposure. We were limited in our financial resources to do any big advertising. We started putting our ideas together and how to be exposed to the public with our limited funds. Then the New York Post asked for an interview and that led to great exposure in that article. It was then that we started being noticed.
What's the niche?
For years the Hip-Hop generation has struggled with a voice that is now being heard worldwide. Major corporations now listen and use this voice to reach the consumer. Hip hop is the lifestyle that has become a necessity. Greeting cards are another way of reaching out when the physical is not possible. OSC appeals to the individuals with an edge and a passion solely expressed through the hip hop voice! These cards speak the language found on the concrete jungle that we call the streets. No better card can you get than the one where the need to be heard is mandated.
What's the biggest challenge?
OSC's biggest challenge is the mainstream market. Even though we are in some "mom and pop" stores, being recognized at the level of Hallmark or American Greetings is the greatest challenge we have.
What's in store for the future?
OSC will continue to make its mark in the larger market. We stand firm in our vision and product. OSC has many new products on our plate. However, we must first get our foot in the door.
Who would you like to be contacted by?
We are interested in being contacted by the larger greeting card companies, hip hop industry, corporations and any other parties interested in our products.
