Daniel and the Global Micro-Clinic Project

Healthcare in America is already shaky or non-existent for far too many people. In developing countries, America's shortcomings are a relative luxury. With countless preventable deaths arising from lack of the simplest sanitary practices and medical treatments in an ever-growing global economy, it's inexusable. Daniel Zoughbie has had enough of this. At 21, he's the founder of the Global Micro-Clinic Project, an organization aiming to bring health education and healing powers to local communities. By empowering individuals within the community, these life-saving clinics can operate at a low overhead and can be set up almost anywhere in the world. The result is simple but profound: a fuller and more positive life because of preventative care and medicine. Learn how David and GMCP are changing the world in this week's Non-Profit Spotlight.

About the Non-profit

The Global Micro-Clinic Project is an organization which seeks to empower people to prevent and manage diseases in economically depressed and conflict-ridden areas of our world. The project centers around a community-driven philosophy, forming partnerships between health care professionals, academia, government, and citizens, recognizing that civic involvement is the life-blood of functioning communities and the foundation of healthy cities.

Toward these ends, the project seeks to more broadly link health education opportunities in the form of lectures and seminars with practical experience through workshops and hands-on learning, ultimately resulting in the creation of intimate support groups or "micro-clinics," whereby affected populations can share the prohibitive costs of maintaining appropriate medical monitoring equipment and supplies, or collectively utilize vital treatment options for diseases and health conditions. The micro-clinic model relies on the volunteer efforts of local health care professionals and concerned citizens, so that together they might improve the health of their communities. Thus, the micro-clinics are designed to create an infrastructure, which is not owned by a governmental organization or even an NGO, but importantly, the micro-clinics are the people.

The micro-clinic model offers the prospect of a culturally and economically sustainable system with a potential for scalability, making a stride in creating a healthier, more just and sustainable world.

Most notable milestones

Piloting a health project for diabetics in Palestine, establishing 50 micro-clinics.

What's the niche?

Advocating a business as unusual approach to health care in the Developing World, GMCP seeks to provide access to health care using a system of grassroots community owned and managed “micro-clinics.”

What's the biggest challenge?

Fundraising!

What's in store for the future?

We aim to use the micro-clinic model for other diseases and health issues in other parts of the Developing World.

Who would you like to be contacted by?

Anyone interested in furthering our objective of improving access to health care. Specifically, we are looking for companies or individuals who would be willing to fund Global Micro-Clinic Fellowships through the University of California, so that students might apply the micro-clinic model globally.

Only through service to others can we truly break down the barriers of hatred and insularity.

Yardstick of success

Scalability, lifestyle changes, detection of health problems in others, and in the long-term, reduction of morbidity and mortality.

Goal yet to be achieved

To establish Global Micro-Clinic Fellowships at every major university around the world.

Best practical advice

The golden rule.

Supportive words from a family member or friend on your venture

What motivated you to get started?

My grandmother passed away from diabetes in Palestine due to restrictions on movement, a lack of education, and the tense political situation.

An architect – I used to draw buildings all the time and I even built my own tree-house

Person most interested in meeting

Many people from the past and present. I would be interested to meet Rosa Parks when she was a young woman, as I believe she was an exemplar of the type of leadership we need today. She was “tired” of the status quo, and challenged the power structures of injustice. In doing so, she quite literally changed the world.
