Danny+Dera
Danny Dera

Social Nework Innovator Danny Dera of OArabs.com

It used to be that Type-A personalities could probably boast about having more friends than the average person. But in the era of social networks, even the biggest recluse can have friends in the hundreds (some of them could even be celebrities!). It's another facet of the digital divide, having too many friends to truly build/maintain a relationship with (let alone meet). Oarabs.com is trying to change that. Founded in August 2005, Oarabs.com, with a team of innovators like Danny Dera, 28, wants to bridge the online world with the real world. The emphasis isn't on having a laundry list of virtual friends, but on making tangible connections: finding people with similar interests that you'll actually plan to meet and do activities with. No more hiding behind the computer. Learn more about Oarabs.com and Danny in this week's Young & Professional Profile.

About the company

OArabs.com is an online community that connects people through events organized by its members or by the OTeam. OArabs.com provides a bridge between the online space and the real world creating a unique meeting place for people to socialize, make new acquaintances and find others who share their interests.

Most notable milestones

  • Successfully launching OArabs.com in September 2006
  • Adding more than 1000 members in October Alone
  • Building a very Enthusiastic and exciting team of friends (The OTeam) in October 2006 to help in organically growing OArabs.com friends network
  • The OTeam has successfully organized Oarabs.com site Launch party which will be announced in the near future

What's the niche?

OArabs.com is not an “another” social networking site or that “other” dating site. We are not an online space where you build virtual friends that are disconnected from the real world. We are not the yellow pages or the white pages where a member is tagged by his pictures and a brief description about himself. We are bucking the trend in serving as a true bridge between the online space and the real world. We go beyond a website to a true group of friends that loves to organize events and get to meet up at parties, in the movies at the park on a fishing trip, at a paint ball game …

What's the biggest challenge?

OArabs.com caters to the Middle Eastern community which is a very conservative community. One of the challenges that we have to deal with is the common taboos that come with our heritage:

Posting a photo online is embarrassing!
Meeting strangers is a No No!
I don’t want to be on dating site!

But OArabs is not a dating site; it is a group of true friends. As we continue to communicate our vision and our founding mission to our community we will successfully break these taboos. We are already seeing this trend with our members.

What's in store for the future?

We will continue to innovate bringing very exciting features to our site. We will continue to grow our user base and communicate our mission to our community. The OTeam is cooking tons and tons of exciting events, that will be announced in the near future, just hang tight!

Who would you like to be contacted by?

Anyone who brushes her teeth! Just kidding! Anyone who shares our vision and who's committed to our mission in bringing the middle eastern community together. No Bill Collectors please! =)

Best way to keep a competitive edge

Every Friend matters! The OTeam works very hard at getting to know everyone on OArabs.com. No one is a stranger on our network. From the technical side, as I mentioned before it is very important to keep innovating and improving our site by adding very exciting features and a great content. Keeping close attention to our members’ recommendations is what we strive for on a daily basis.

Guiding principle in life

Integrity Integrity Integrity!

Yardstick of success

If I had to use a yardstick to keep score of my success, I would measure the width of my smile and the excitement in my eyes.

Goal yet to be achieved

Unite our community and turn it into a solid rock of true friends. One friend at a time!

Best practical advice

Keep your zipper up and your shoes clean, am I getting too practical here? I beleive it is crucial to follow your passion in life, and to fight for it with your teeth. Success is about a 1000 failures put together, don't give up! Everytime you fail, you are one step closer toward achieving your goals.

Supportive words from a family member or friend on your venture

I pay very little attention to words, but the greatest thing to experience is when you see your friends and family more excited about what you are doing than you are. It pushes you to the edge, keep you going and make you unstoppable.

Mentor(s) and why?

I'm a person that loves people. I love listening to their stories, their problems, their success their failures ... That's my real mentor I beleive, being very attentive to people and learning from them. I have learned from janitors as much as I learned from CEOs from kids as much as from adults.

What motivated you to get started?

People are very social by nature, they love to hang out, meet new people, and make new friends. With the busy schedules that we all have, it is very hard to be on the go all the time. The online world offers a great alternative to that by allowing you to filter thousands of people and decide who interest you and who doesn't. But the major social networking portals and dating sites disconnected the online world from the real world. There is no value in having thousands of virtual friends, where their friendship is measured by the number of comments or messages they send you. That’s not how friendship works in the real world. I found it very important to be able to bring these two worlds back together. Adding the ethnic factor to the formula simulates the real world in a much better way and naturally brings people who share the same beliefs, values and traditions together.

Like best about what you do?

I create new friendships every minute of the day! That's very exciting and rewarding by itself, and that’s what I truly love about what I do!

Like least about what you do?

We are new players in the space. Thousands of sites preceded us and shaped the image of social networking. When a new member land on our site, they already have that old image in the back of their head. It makes it tougher for us to communicate our mission to them and have them understand our real cause.

At age 10, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I don't think that I had one thing in mind but one thought for sure was going in the back of my head. I just wanted to be an adult, because it was cool to stay up all night watching TV, drive a car and not go to school.

What was your first job?

Jewelry sales man, beat that!

Biggest pastime outside of work

Hang out with friends, read a little, party, fishing and hiking!

Person most interested in meeting and why?

Everyone! People are very interesting, everyone has a story and an exciting experience that I always love to hear.

Serge Brin and Larry page. I have met the rest =)
