MAKING SOUL: A WRITING & PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP with Aimee Suzara

WHEN: March 11, March 17, March 18 and March 22-May 10 WHERE: All at Epic Arts Studios, 1923 Ashby Ave, Berkeley (near Ashby BART).

DETAILS: 1-DAY INTENSIVES Are you looking to re-spark your writing voice, learn to embody your writing, or take a writing workshop for the first time? Are there stories you have needed to tell, but need some tools? This workshop may be just for you! You may take one or all three intensives. You may also take these intensives as a launch-off point for the Full 8-week Series that begins shortly after! Please register at least 1 week in advance to ensure a spot. [email protected]

MARCH 11 (Sun), 1-5 pm – Women of Color workshop. Celebrate International Women’s Day with a special intensive workshop for women of color focusing on storytelling and the particular issues we face. Cost: sliding scale $40-60. MARCH 17 (Sat), 1-4 pm – Introduction to Making Soul: from the body to the page. Open to all levels and people from ages 17-77+. Cost: sliding scale $30-50. MARCH 18 (Sun), 1-4pm –- Introduction to Making Soul Part II: focus on collaboration and performance. Cost: sliding scale $30-50.

***** “making soul”: a writing and performance workshop FULL (8-week) SERIES Whether you took “Making Soul” in the past and would like to continue the process, or have little experience with writing and performance, this may be for you! If you’re new, taking one of the introductory intensives (see above) is strongly recommended, though not required. The workshops will move from raw writing and movement exercises to collaboration, feedback, revision and performance. Each session will have a distinct topic and there will be short assignments to work on at home.

Pre-registration required. You must commit to the entire series. $200-250 sliding scale fee for all 8 sessions $175 for payment before FEBRUARY 22 (1st CLASS FREE!) Youth and low-income rates also available.

DESCRIPTION: a writing and performance workshop series for adults of all ages (17 to 77+) to explore histories, language, identity, and our visions for ourselves within a changing world. We will draw from our collective and individual voices to discover old-new languages in our bodies and on our tongues. All levels welcome: No writing or performance experience necessary, but experienced writers/performers can also benefit. Consistent attendance to entire series is required to ensure continuity and the most productive environment possible.

The course will include: • theatre games and warm-ups • movement exercises to get into the body and generate material • referencing other art forms to inspire our writing (film, music, dance, visual art) • dialogues about arts and activism, storytelling, writing for the page and the stage • individual work with coaching and feedback • group work and at least one collaborative piece • revision techniques and practice • a culminating reading/performance
